CARING FOR YOUR SHEEPSKIN PRODUCTS

Maintenance of Sheepskin:

To prevent hard spots, you should completely brush out the dried sweat and loose hairs (a pin brush without the little balls is recommended)

Gently patting the fur can help keep it airy.

Do not expose sheepskin to direct sunlight, but your sheepskin product appreciates good airing in foggy weather and even a good snow bath. These weather circumstances contributes to the natural refreshing and cleaning capacities of the fur. Snow even kills bacteria.

Washing Your Sheepskin Product:

If your product gets particularly dirty/muddy then follow below steps to clean:

Your fur or sheepskin product is naturally fed with lanolin, a natural sheepskin oil. This oil ensures that your sheepskin product can last for years with simple and regular maintenance. Keep in mind all cleaning products extract this oil from the skin and wool fibers.

It is therefore absolutely essential to use a special sheepskin detergent for washing.

Any simple wool detergent will irreparably damage the product by removing this oil from your product. However the right detergent will at help feed your sheepskin with natural oil.

Remember to remove the pad inserts before washing!

Washing your sheepskin product by hand is preferable. In case you choose to wash in a machine, select the special wool program at a low temperature and the lowest speed of centrifuge.

Let your sheepskin dry naturally - do not dry in the dryer or expose your wet sheepskin product to direct sunlight - an accelerated drying process makes the skin hard!

Drying your sheepskin product is the most vulnerable part of the cleaning process. Depending on your fur product (a nose fur has different proportions compared to the used sheepskin of a western pad), the drying process can take several days or even up to 1 week.

Definitely do not ever use a dryer, also never expose your sheepskin to the front of a heater, or under direct sunlight.

During the drying process regularly stretch and knead the product, but do not wring. In doing so, always leave the original shape.

A too fast drying process dehydrates the lanolin, added via the special detergent, resulting in a stiff and hard skin due to the lack of wool grease.

Only by careful handwashing or wool machine washing, followed by a careful drying (as described above) will your product be able to maintain its suppleness.

Sheepskin is one the of the best pad materials!

Sheepskin is a natural product, it is fully breathable, suitable for both summer and winter use and is excellent from a hygiene point of view as it is naturally bacteria resistant.

The softness of the sheepskin against the horse’s skin will help the horse to feel comfortable, take away any pressure, and encourage the horse to move freely. It will help to prevent rubbing, and aid the horse in its ability to perform and respond to the rider, feeling only what you want the horse to feel i.e. you, the rider, and not uneven pressure from the tack.

Medicinal Sheepskin have a high therapeutic value; they promote circulation and are temperature balancing. They reduce saddle pressure and prevent the development of sores.

In addition, they do not provide a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria, and they neutralize acids and odours and are naturally dirt resistant. They are easy care and hard wearing.

Used by the nomads 12,000 years ago wool makes one of the oldest and most functional raw materials for production of protective articles for humans and animals. The described characteristics and properties of wool and sheepskin makes it a unique product for you and your horse. A simple regular care guarantees you and your horse enjoyment of this great product for years.
