How To Clean Sheepskin Saddle Pads

One of the most commonly asked questions is how to care for your lovely sheepskin seats or saddle pads! They are a rather large investment so you'll be wanting to make sure you keep yours in tip top shape, I clean mine twice a year. Yes that's right not much huh? Between cleaning I give my sheepskin the odd brush this keeps the wool lovely and fluffy and comfortable for my horse and bum! Below are some instructions and you can also check out the leather and sheepskin page for cleaners and more instructions. If you have shaved wool for your pad or seat saver please don't use the wool brush its made for sheepskin only, you can use a softer horse brush and some wool detergent in the washing machine on the "wool cycle".

1.Maintenance of Sheepskin:
To prevent hard spots, you should completely brush out the dried sweat and loose hairs (a pin brush without the little balls is recommended)

2.Washing Your Sheepskin Product:
It is absolutely essential to use a special sheepskin detergent for washing.

3.Remember to remove the pad inserts before washing!

Washing your sheepskin product by hand is preferable. In case you choose to wash in a machine, select the special wool program at a low temperature and the lowest speed of centrifuge.

Let your sheepskin dry naturally - do not dry in the dryer or expose your wet sheepskin product to direct sunlight

Only by careful handwashing or wool machine washing, followed by a careful drying will your product be able to maintain its suppleness.

4.Sheepskin is one the of the best pad materials!

Sheepskin is a natural product, it is fully breathable, suitable for both summer and winter use and is excellent from a hygiene point of view as it is naturally bacteria resistant.

The softness of the sheepskin against the horse’s skin will help the horse to feel comfortable, take away any pressure, and encourage the horse to move freely. It will help to prevent rubbing, and aid the horse in its ability to perform and respond to the rider, feeling only what you want the horse to feel i.e. you, the rider, and not uneven pressure from the tack.

Medicinal Sheepskin have a high therapeutic value; they promote circulation and are temperature balancing. They reduce saddle pressure and prevent the development of sores.

In addition, they do not provide a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria, and they neutralize acids and odours and are naturally dirt resistant. They are easy care and hard wearing.

Used by the nomads 12,000 years ago wool makes one of the oldest and most functional raw materials for production of protective articles for humans and animals. The described characteristics and properties of wool and sheepskin makes it a unique product for you and your horse. A simple regular care guarantees you and your horse enjoyment of this great product for years.
